4/1/2018—–Nathan Ramsey, Director, Mountain Area Workforce Development Board. A 29 member board of private sector employers, education Officials and others work to promote career fairs, employer open houses And other programs to introduce employers to potential employees.

4/8/2018——Sam Powers, Economic and Community Development Director for The City of Asheville discusses projects for the city’s downtown Area including new hotels, residential, commercial and restaurant Projects. The expansion of projects along the city’s south slope area And downtown parking are also discussed.

4//15/2018—–April Burgess Johnson of Helpmate discusses a more than 60 percent Rise in domestic abuse cases since 2013 and the creation of the Buncombe County Justice Center on Woodfin Street which puts all services for Domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse programs under one roof.

4/22/2018—–Kelley Klope, Asheville Fire Department. Tom Tesser, Organizer of a demonstration day in the parking lot of the Buncombe County Family Justice Center with Firefighting Equipment, Fire Education exhibits, games And more.

4/29/2018—–Jim Barrett, Pisgah Legal Service. The agency which provides legal Assistance for clients who cannot afford it for a variety of legal matters Is celebrating it’s 40th anniversary. 5/20/2018—–Sarah Bennett, WIC Program Supervisor for Buncombe County. The Federal Nutrition Program is going to a new debit card system for use By benefit recipients. The new program makes it easier to track purchases And works with cash registers on integrated networks to track purchases And ease the process for recipients.

5/27/2018——Dr. Jennifer Mullendore, Buncombe County Department of Health And Human Services on an outbreak of pertussis or whooping cough In the area. 11 confirmed cases in recent weeks. Advice on being up To date on vaccinations and treatment of the illness.

6/3/2018———Jodi Ford, Children First, Communities in School. The spokeswoman Discusses a food drive to collect food, snacks and other nutritional items For children in Asheville and Buncombe County during the summer.

6/10/2018——-Dr. Alex Schneider, Medical Director, Stroke Program, Mission Health. Registered Nurse Robin Jones, Manager, Stroke Program, Mission Health. Recognizing signs of stroke, treatment advances, follow up, rehabilitation And other programs.

6/17/2018——Alex Comfort from Western Carolina University will be offering a One-day seminar on hiring effective nonprofit leaders on August 31st At the WCU Instruction site in Biltmore Park in Asheville. The program Will focus on ways to raise funds, manage employees and other effective Leadership goals for agencies which make up 10% of the workforce.

6/24/2018—–Ashley Featherstone, WNC Regional Air Quality Agency. New Monitoring equipment installed for checking air quality in the Region, history of the agency, trends in air quality in the area and Improvements in fuels and pollution controls to limit air pollution.

A Pathway to a Cleaner Energy Future for North Carolina
Dave Rogers will present highlights from the Sierra Club’s recent report, “A Pathway to a Cleaner Energy Future for North Carolina.” Rogers is the North Carolina Campaign Representative for the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign.
The Sierra Club’s mission is to explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth; to practice/promote the responsible use of the earth’s ecosystems and resources; to educate/enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and to use all lawful means to carry out these objectives.

Pardee UNC Health Care Head and Neck Cancer Screening
Pardee UNC Health Care will host a head and neck cancer screening on Tuesday, April 10 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Pardee Cancer Center, located at 805 6th Avenue West in Hendersonville. Many head and neck cancers are linked to HPV, alcohol and tobacco use, or sun exposure, and can potentially be cured if found early. Screenings are free and open to the public. MS Walk and Wellness
Hosted by the National MS Society and the MS Community of WNC will be held Sunday, April 15, 2018 from 1:00pm-5:00pm at Fletcher Community Park in Fletcher, NC.
Individuals and families of those with MS will learn about local resources from on-site local health professionals who will offer tips and demonstrations in their areas of expertise.
Enjoy all this while advancing MS Research for furthering treatment options and ultimately finding a cure.

UNC Asheville Student Art & Pottery Sale
The annual spring UNC Asheville Student Art and Pottery Sale will be held Friday, April 27, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and Saturday, April 28, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, in the Tucker Cooke Gallery, located on the ground floor in Owen Hall, corner of University Heights and Edgewood Rd. A wide variety of functional and decorative pottery, drawings, prints, paintings, photography, glass and sculpture crafted by UNC Asheville students will be on sale with pieces beginning at $5. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Department of Art and Art History. The sale is open to the public.

Free Shredding Event
Many of the documents we keep contain sensitive personal information and Better Business Bureau is making it easy for you to safely dispose of it all at its free shredding event. This free event will take place on Saturday, April 28th from 10am to 12pm at the BBB office in Asheville, 112 Executive Park, Asheville, NC 28801, telephone 828-253-2392. Each car can bring up to four bankers boxes of papers to shred. It will all be safely and securely shredded onsite and recycled.

Disney Institute: Disney’s Approach to Employee Engagement
In response to an extremely low regional unemployment rate of 3.9 percent and an expressed need from area companies to find and retain right-fit employees, Blue Ridge Community College’s Professional Development Institute announced that Disney Institute will return to campus to present “Disney’s Approach to Employee Engagement.” The day-long training event will take place on Wednesday, May 2 in the Blue Ridge Conference Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The seminar will share Disney’s secrets to attracting, retaining and developing employees dedicated to a company’s vision. Tickets are $395 per person and include all course materials, lunch, and parking. Additionally, companies can register for a table of six and receive the sixth ticket free. The Mediation Center presents author and criminal justice reform activist Susan Burton at its annual “Speak Your Peace” event. Burton is an advocate for restoring civil and human rights to formerly incarcerated people.
The Mediation helps people find common ground and move through tough conflicts.

VA2K Walk and Roll
The annual VA2K Walk & Roll is a walk of approximately 1.2 miles that encourages people to live active lifestyles. It also allows participants to support homeless Veterans through voluntary donations of food and clothing items. The 8th annual VA2K Walk & Roll is a free event open to the community. Rain or shine event will be held on May 16th from 11:00 am- 1:00pm located at 1100 Tunnel Rd. VAMC campus.

Appalachian Trail Conservancy Backpacking Course
The ATC is currently accepting applications for novice hikers interested in a 3 day/2-night led backpacking course to prepare them for a long-distance hike. The courses will help new hikers feel prepared to successfully hike the A.T. with confidence.

Pardee UNC Health Care to Host Free “Cancer Conversations” Webinar
Pardee UNC Health Care will host “Cancer Conversations,” a monthly educational webinar series in partnership with UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, on Friday, June 29 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in Pardee’s videoconference room, located at 800 N. Justice Street. This month’s webinar will focus on cancer myths and facts. The program is free and open to the public.

The Firecracker 5K
The Firecracker 5K race in the neighborhoods and streets of downtown Weaverville is planned for Wednesday, July 4, beginning at 8 a.m. from PNC Bank on Weaver Boulevard in Weaverville. Funds raised will be used for scholarships for students.
The Kwanis Club’s mission is to provide services for children and young people of our community, primarily by awarding scholarships for students going on from high school to college or community college.

Monthly Bariatric Support Groups
Pardee Bariatrics & Weight Loss will host monthly bariatric support group meetings beginning Wednesday, May 16 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Mission Pardee Health Campus, located at 2775 Hendersonville Road (second floor) in Arden. The support group will meet the third Wednesday of every month. Meetings are free and open to the public; walk-ins are welcome and no registration is required. Attendees are invited to bring a family member or friend.
The first meeting will cover “Navigating Eating in Social Settings.” Pardee’s bariatric dietitian will teach attendees how to stay on track with their bariatric meal plan during challenging social situations, whether they are in the pre-surgery or postoperative phase of the program. The 2018 Folkmoot festival dates are July 19 – 29 and feature cultural ambassadors/dance performing groups from Ghana, Italy, Czech Republic, Mexico, Venezuela and Northern Cyprus, Thailand and local Appalachian and Cherokee dancers and musicians.
Folkmoot is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization that fosters the vibrancy of many cultures into one community. Folkmoot programs are based on cultural exchange and designed to build global relationships, foster cultural understanding and develop community prosperity.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s Asheville
It’s not too early to sign up for the 2018 Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. The Alzheimer’s Association – Western Carolina Chapter is inviting Buncombe and Henderson County residents to turn their communities into a sea of purple and help fight Alzheimer’s at a Walk in their community. The Walk in Asheville will take place on Saturday, Sept. 15 at Pack Square Park and in Hendersonville on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Jackson Park. Check in opens at 9:00AM and the Walks start at 10:30AM.
Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® participants will complete a one- to two-mile walk and will learn about Alzheimer’s disease, advocacy opportunities, clinical studies enrollment, and support programs and services from the Alzheimer’s Association. Walk participants will also join in a meaningful tribute ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

Folkmoot 2017

The 2017 festival dates are July 20 – 30 and feature cultural ambassadors/dance performing groups from India, Netherlands, Slovenia, Argentina, Russia, Israel, Taiwan, Wales and local Appalachian and Cherokee dancers and musicians.

Named by USA Today as one of the Top Twenty Festivals in North Carolina, Folkmoot is a ten-day event, held across the mountains of Western North Carolina in Waynesville, Clyde, Lake Junaluska, Maggie Valley, Canton, Cherokee, Franklin, Hickory, Asheville, and Hendersonville, plus a first performance in Greenville, South Carolina.

National Telecommuting Institute Work Placement Program

National Telecommuting Institute recently partnered with American rock band ‘Portugal. The Man’ on a PSA to increase awareness of NTI’s ability to help Americans with disabilities back to work. The band was recently on both “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Conan” showcasing their #1 Billboard Chart song Feel it Still. Eric Howk, guitarist for PTM, recorded the PSAs. Howk can relate to NTI and the world of disability because he uses a wheelchair in day-to-day life after an accident left him paralyzed. One in 5 Americans, like Howk, struggles with disability.

National Telecommuting Institute (NTI) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide work-at-home jobs for Americans with Disabilities and Disabled Veterans.

Pardee UNC Health Care Free Prostate Cancer Educational Session

Pardee UNC Health Care will host a free prostate cancer educational session on Thursday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m. in the Pardee Cancer Center, located at 805 6th Avenue West in Hendersonville.

The educational session, “The ABCs of Screening for Prostate Cancer,” is free and open to the public. Urologist W. Glover Little, M.D., will present on the who, what, when, where and why of prostate cancer, and will be available to speak one-on-one with guests afterward. Men ages 40 to 75 will have the opportunity to be pre-qualified for prostate cancer screenings. Light snacks and beverages will be served.

Pre-qualification is required for screenings and walk-ins will not be accepted. To pre-qualify, please call 828-698-7317. Spanish interpretation services are available free of charge.

Buncombe Summit Hill Climb 5K on Reynolds Mountain

Proceeds will be used to buy fire extinguishers & smoke detectors for people in need. There will be fire trucks from various departments, kids agility course, and a raffle ($2,000 in prizes)

A Garden of Quilts

The Western North Carolina Quilters’ Guild is presenting a juried quilt show entitled “A Garden of Quilts” on May 5 (10 am – 5 pm) and May 6, 2017 (10 am – 4 pm) at Bonclarken Conference Center, Flat Rock, NC 28731. $5 admission with free parking.

The Western North Carolina Quilters Guild in Hendersonville, NC, is dedicated to understanding and learning more about quilting and perpetuating this art form. We are a group of more than 150 women and men who are interested in quilting. Our skills range from beginner to professional, but we all enjoy a good time and we’re good at sharing information and helping one another.

Strive Week, May 12-19, features event programs in Asheville, Hendersonville, Waynesville, Black Mountain, and Brevard, which all highlight the fun and exercise that we can enjoy when we park the car. Asheville on Bikes will co-host events and rides.

Strive Not To Drive, goes back 25 years in our region as an effort to encourage commuters and all travelers to go from point A to point B without a car. We encourage going by bike, foot, bus or carpool, all fueled by fun.

Spring Fling Plant Sale

Spring Fling Plant Sale will have a variety of roses, perennials, native plants, pollinators and garden implements. Buncombe Master Gardeners and Blue Ridge Rose Society members will be on hand to help in choosing the right plant for the right place.

As Master Gardener volunteers, we are part of a vast national Cooperative Extension system that seeks to help individuals, families and communities put research based knowledge to work in their lives. The Master Gardener program is supported by research based information generated at NC State University, NC A&T State University and other land-grant colleges. Our mission is to provide education and current research-based urban horticultural information for our community through the North Carolina Cooperative Extension programs and activities; while striving to improve and preserve our natural environment.

A Cappella Fest 2017

Presenting our 60th annual show, this year entitled “A CAPPELLA FEST 2017”, Saturday, May 13, 7:30 PM, at the DIANA WORTHAM THEATRE, 18 Biltmore Ave., Asheville. Proceeds will be donated to support music education in local high schools.

The Land of the Sky Chorus is the performance name of the Asheville Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. The Chapter is an educational and fraternal singing organization open to men who like to sing.

A group of Black Mountain residents initiated the Black Mountain Beautification Committee in 2000 with the goal of improving the aesthetics of our community.The people of Black Mountain possess a cherished tradition of honoring the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains, all the while seeking to reflect that beauty on the streets and in the lives of its citizens. The Beautification Committee strives to maintain and nurture the town gardens, green areas and also to establish more natural gardens in designated open areas.

There will be Square dancing, a raffle, and a silent auction with participation from Hi-Wire, French Broad Chocolate Lounge. Also a live auction dinner for 8 at Chestnut. Money raised funds operation expenses to continue providing food and education to those in need in WNC.

Using the garden as a platform, The Lord’s Acre is a visionary model of cooperation which educates and inspires people to address the many types of hunger through caring service and the growing and sharing of food. This is accomplished by working with schools, colleges, churches, children’s groups, similar gardens, and other organizations.

A Memorial Day Observance will be held at Lake Louise Park in Weaverville, NC at Noon on Monday, May 29th. The program features Air Force veterans and nationally acclaimed musicians Anita and Luis Diaz from Balsam, NC.

Join us for our 3rd year- ACR Music for the Sole 5K. This exciting event will bring together music lovers and trail running enthusiasts as it benefits the AC Reynolds band. The first 150 participants who register for the race will be guaranteed to receive an event t-shirt.

As the Water Warriors of Erwin Middle School, we are hoping to raise $1,500 to help poverty stricken villages gain access to clean water. In its efforts to bring more year-round cultural programming to the region, Folkmoot is partnering with The Classic Wineseller for a fundraising event to purchase stage curtains in the Sam Love Queen Auditorium. The evening will feature tasty wine, live music and delicious food at The Classic Wineseller located at 20 Church Street in Waynesville on Thursday, February 9, 2017 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

The menu will include four courses and one glass of wine or nonalcoholic beverage. This event is perfect for an early Valentines Day date night.

The races include a 10k, 5k, and 1-mile Fun Run around Lelia Patterson Center in Fletcher, presented by Trace & Company. A portion of proceeds will be going to The United Way Big Brother, Big Sisters program.
