ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Asheville Junior Theater is offering summer camps and year-round arts programming for children ages 4 to 16, providing opportunities for young people to explore acting, singing, dancing and technical theater.

The nonprofit organization in South Asheville has operated in the area since 2021, with a mission to inspire youth and transform lives through the performing arts.

The theater’s summer camps allow students to try performing in preparation for fall productions or simply for seasonal enrichment. In addition to onstage training, campers can learn backstage technical skills, giving them a broader understanding of theatrical production.

Throughout the year, Asheville Junior Theater presents two to three large-scale, pre-professional productions designed to mirror professional theater experiences. Students participate in auditions, rehearsals, ensemble work and backstage operations, building responsibility and collaboration skills.

The organization also stages a Christmas show, a spring production in its black box theater and a large end-of-year dance showcase.

Its School of the Arts offers instruction in dance, theater, voice, music, choir and musical theater. Classes are taught by industry professionals and focus on technique, artistry and communication skills. Regular programming runs from September through May, including dance classes and choir, along with winter break camps and summer camps.

Leaders say the organization serves serious young performers seeking advanced training and students exploring the arts for the first time.

The theater operates under a set of core values that include excellence, creativity, integrity, hard work, community, confidence and joy.

Organizers say the most rewarding aspect of the work is watching students grow in confidence and discover abilities they did not know they had.
