ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Burton Street Community Association and Asheville Parks & Recreation will host the annual Burton Street Ag Fair on Saturday, featuring the opening of a new playground and basketball court at Burton Street Park.
The celebration runs from noon to 6 p.m. at the park and community center, 134 Burton St. in West Asheville. The family-friendly festival will include live music, games, crafts, inflatables, food vendors and a 3-on-3 basketball tournament with a cash prize.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for noon to officially dedicate the park’s new playground and refurbished basketball court.
“This new playground and basketball court are a wonderful addition to the Burton Street community and the center — and we can’t wait to see kids and families enjoy them for years to come,” Asheville Parks & Recreation Director D. Tyrell McGirt said in a statement.
The revitalized fair, relaunched 12 years ago, pays tribute to Edward W. Pearson, a civic leader and founder of the Burton Street neighborhood. Pearson organized Buncombe County’s first district agricultural fair in 1913, which drew Black families from across Western North Carolina for parades, rides and competitions in farming, baking and sewing.
Now in its 112th year, the fair continues under the motto “We Rise By Lifting Others Up,” highlighting neighborhood pride and community connection.
The event is supported by Asheville Buncombe Institute of Parity Achievement, Health Engagement Leading to Prevention, Health Education Resource Services, St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church and the John R. Hayes High Steppin’ Majorette & Drum Corps.
