ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Vortex Doughnuts has closed permanently after more than a decade in business, according to posts on the company’s social media and a notice placed on its storefront.

The doughnut shop announced the closure on Instagram with a brief message reading, “CLOSED PERMANENTLY. Thanks for a great run, Asheville. 2014-2026.”

The announcement followed an earlier post indicating the shop had temporarily shut down after a breaker failure caused the loss of refrigerated inventory. The business had said it expected to reopen the next day.

A sign posted on the shop’s door Tuesday stated that April 14, 2026, would be its final day of operation, citing “unforeseen circumstances” and thanking longtime customers for their support.

News of the closure spread quickly on social media, where customers expressed disappointment and shared memories of the business.

At the same time, unverified allegations about the closure and its impact on employees circulated on social media. The business has not publicly responded.

Efforts to reach someone from the business for comment were unsuccessful.

The sudden shutdown prompted some community members to seek recommendations for other doughnut shops in the Asheville area.
