CANTON, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Canton residents will have to hit the road or go online to renew their vehicle tags after a violation at the local plate agency.
The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles has closed the license plate agency in Canton because of a contract violation, a news release from the North Carolina Department of Transportation said. Officials did not say what the violation was.
In North Carolina, NCDMV oversees LPAs, but the agencies are managed by private businesses or local governments. The agency at 11 Peach Bloom Drive (N.C. 215) in Canton has been operated since 2016 by Tammy Case, the news release said.
NCDMV is now seeking applicants for a new contractor to operate a license plate agency in Canton.
The division’s policy is to open applications to operate a license plate agency after the expiration or end of a contract, or when the need arises for a new or additional agency in a certain county.
Completed applications must be returned to NCDMV no later than March 5. The applications (Form MVR-93I, Form MVR-93B, or Form MVR-93M) can be found on the Connect NCDOT website. Interested applicants may call 919-615-8521 with questions. All applications must be submitted via email to ApplicationLPA@ncdot.gov. No mail-in applications will be accepted.

LPAs offer vehicle registration services and title transactions, as well as vehicle license plate renewals, replacement tags and duplicate registrations. Currently, 124 license plate agencies operate in North Carolina.
Three nearby license plate agencies offer service Monday through Friday, except for state holidays:
- Waynesville, 80 Waynesville Plaza, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
- Asheville, 153 Smokey Park Highway, Suite 106-A, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
