Community gets first look at West Asheville’s next public pool

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Asheville residents will get their first look at the design for a new public pool in West Asheville during a community open house Sept. 23.

The event will run from 5 to 7 p.m. at West Asheville Park, 198 Vermont Ave. Residents can review the proposed design for Malvern Hills Park’s new swimming pool, meet with project designers and offer feedback before the plans are finalized.

The project includes construction of a new pool and renovation of the park’s historic 1935 bathhouse. It is funded by a general obligation bond package approved by city voters for parks and recreation upgrades.

“This is your chance to tell us what you like about the design and what you think is missing,” Parks & Recreation Director D. Tyrell McGirt said in a statement. “We’re on an aggressive timeline to bring this new pool to the community as quickly as possible.”

The proposed design for Malvern Hills Park’s new swimming pool also includes renovation of the park’s historic 1935 bathhouse.

The open house will also feature family activities, refreshments, and giveaways while supplies last. Spanish-language interpreters will be available.

Those unable to attend can share feedback through an online survey on the city’s project page, by emailing Assistant Parks & Recreation Director Pete Wall at pwall@ashevillenc.gov or by speaking with project staff at community events this fall.

City officials say the design is based on data from a previous community survey. Feedback from the open house and other outreach efforts will help finalize the plan while accounting for safety codes, environmental standards and the project budget.

For the past 14 weeks and counting, the top Billboard spot has been held by a love ballad: Alex Warren's "Ordinary." As Berklee College of Music professor and forensic musicologist Joe Bennett notes, the February release is "a fair bit slower than the mean average for the Hot 100, or for a historical song of the summer."
