ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — North Buncombe Quarry and Southern Concrete Materials are proposing a new concrete plant on a five-acre parcel of land directly adjacent to the quarry along Goldview Road outside Woodfin, N.C.
Goldview is heavily trafficked by large trucks carrying quarry materials on and off of Exit 21 at New Stock Road. The new plant would add to the traffic flow for the Goldview neighborhood, which has raised concerns among residents.
North Buncombe Quarry and SCM sent a letter to local residents within 1000 feet of the potential build site to inform them of their plans. A date was scheduled for an informational meeting that will detail the specific steps for building the new plant.
“The meeting will include a high-level introduction to the proposed concrete plant project and outline the steps required for approval through the Buncombe County application process,” the letter reads. “Those participating are allowed to provide comments regarding the project.”
The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 2 at Linder Industrial Machinery, 575 Goldview Road.
In response to receiving the letter from the quarry, a contingent of Goldview residents delivered their own letter to households in the area urging them to come speak out against the plant at the meeting.
In the neighborhood letter, concerned residents said that “many of us in the neighborhood feel the current noise, air pollution, and road damage on Goldview are already too much for a residential neighborhood. Adding a new concrete plant will only increase the problems.”
The letter reminded residents that they have power and a say in determining the future of their neighborhood.
“We can say “no” to increased industrial activity in our neighborhood,” the residents wrote.
