ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Buncombe County is experiencing abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, prompting county officials to urge caution with outdoor burning.

The Buncombe County Fire Marshal on Monday discouraged open burning through Dec. 31, citing increased fire danger and windy conditions. Officials said conditions do not currently warrant a burn ban, but asked residents to refrain from burning if possible to help protect people and property.

If residents do burn, county officials reminded the public that all fires must be attended at all times and have a means of extinguishment readily available. Fires should be kept small and manageable and at least 25 feet away from structures and combustible vegetation.

Burning is prohibited in areas with public yard waste pickup, including the city of Asheville and other municipalities. Only natural vegetation is permitted to be burned where allowed.

Residents can check whether open burning is permitted on a given day by calling the Open Burning Hotline at 828-250-6767. Additional guidelines are available on the county’s website.
