Abeja’s House Cafe has been one of the best breakfast spots in town for more than a decade now. I’m a big fan, but somehow hadn’t been in a couple years. So, last weekend, I decided to see if it had kept its Latin flavors up to par.

This place is a little gem, tucked away in a strip mall on Hendersonville Road in South Asheville. It’s actually so tucked away that it’s hard to see from the road. Of course, this makes it an even better attraction for the locals.

We stopped in around 11 a.m., and I was surprised to see there was no wait. This was disconcerting to me, as I’d never experienced that before. The very kind server seated us immediately and brought out our delicious coffees. Right off the bat, the coffee was an enormous improvement. In the past, the coffee was my least favorite aspect. I’m happy to see that positive change.

The food arrived at our table very quickly. I was also surprised by that.

My go-to is the Mexican scramble. She ordered the gluten-free blueberry pancakes, topped with whipped cream and powdered sugar and served with maple syrup on the side, along with a side of bacon. The pancakes were wonderful, and if you ever visit, always order that side of bacon. It’s perfect.

I had old faithful: the Mexican omelet, a hefty serving of eggs filled with chorizo sausage, peppers, pico de gallo and cheddar cheese. In my absence, nothing with this dish changed. It was as good as it always was. I, too, ordered a side of bacon, and I wish I’d ordered two servings! The biscuit was fluffy and tasty, as was the housemade raspberry jam. I also like how most dishes are garnished with orange slices.

This place is open til 3 p.m., so if you’re not feeling breakfast, you can opt for many healthy or heavy lunch options, from salads to burgers.

Everything has held up, and I have no real criticism. It’s reliable and good. Very solid. You should try this cozy spot on any given Sunday … or any other day.
