HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Haywood County Search and Rescue crews responded to two separate incidents Sunday involving hikers in the region’s public lands, both with positive outcomes.
According to Haywood County Search and Rescue, the first call came from Jackson County Emergency Management for assistance locating a hiker who became separated from his group near Wet Camp Gap and spent the night outdoors. Crews located the man cold but alive and safely extracted him from the forest.
A few hours later, responders were dispatched to aid an injured hiker who had broken an ankle on a trail near the Blue Ridge Parkway. Haywood County Emergency Services, Cruso Fire and Rescue and search and rescue teams stabilized the hiker, transported them in a stokes basket to the parkway and transferred them to an awaiting ambulance.
Officials said they were grateful both incidents ended safely and wished the hikers well in their recovery.
