ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Work on the Interstate 26 Connector is making progress along the French Broad River, while the former Jacksons Western Store building off Patton Avenue in the Resort Drive area could be demolished in the coming months.

Crews continue building a temporary rock causeway in the river, and the contractor expects to begin the second phase of that work before the end of October, according to N.C. Department of Transportation spokesperson Stephanie Johnson.

“We’re anticipating the contractor will move into Phase 2 of the causeway work before the end of the month,” Johnson said.

The causeway gives construction crews access to the river to build foundations for new bridges that are part of the I-26 Connector. The temporary structure will eventually be removed.

NCDOT has not yet released details about what the second phase will involve, but Johnson said more information should be available soon.

Meanwhile, Jacksons is moving out of its longtime location, and NCDOT is preparing for the building’s demolition.

Before it can be torn down, required inspections and asbestos abatement must be completed. Johnson said that process is expected to take 30 to 60 days.

Demolition will follow, although NCDOT has not announced a specific date.

Once the building is gone, crews can begin filling and grading the property for the new Resort Drive.

Duke Energy also plans to install a new transmission tower in the area. Johnson said NCDOT expects that work to begin before the end of the year.

The I-26 Connector will create a new interstate route through west Asheville, including new bridges across the French Broad River and changes to major interchanges.

The project is scheduled for completion in late 2031.
