ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Buncombe County Schools will operate on a two-hour delay Tuesday, except for schools in the North Buncombe district, which will be closed, after light overnight snowfall created hazardous conditions on some secondary roads.

School transportation officials said crews were out early Tuesday monitoring travel conditions across the county. While forecasters expect temperatures to rise later in the day, icy patches remain in parts of the county, particularly in the Weaverville and Barnardsville areas, prompting the closure of North Buncombe schools.

Breakfast will be served upon arrival for students attending schools on a two-hour delay.

District officials said transportation teams will continue assessing road conditions and will provide updates if additional schedule changes are necessary.

Several other schools across Western North Carolina also adjusted schedules because of wintry weather:

  • Asheville City Schools: Two-hour delay
  • A-B Tech: Two-hour delay
  • Avery County Schools: Remote learning day
  • Cherokee Central Schools: Two-hour delays
  • Haywood County Schools: Remote learning day/optional teacher workday
  • Madison County Schools: Remote learning day/optional teacher workday
  • Mayland Community College: Remote learning day
  • Mitchell County Schools: Remote learning day
  • Yancey County Schools: Remote learning day

Officials continue to urge caution on untreated secondary roads as conditions improve.
