Update: Man charged in fatal south Asheville motorcycle collision

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — UPDATE: 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025 – Stephen Michael Poandl, 44, was charged by the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office in the Feb. 8 death of motorcyclist Brandon Scott Owenby.

Poandl, who turned himself in on Feb. 10, was charged with:

  • Misdemeanor death by motor vehicle
  • Failure to yield causing serious body injury
  • Improper turn

Poandl was booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility on a $20,000 unsecured bond and released.

Brandon Scott Owenby, 44, was killed on his motorcycle Saturday afternoon in a collision off of Hendersonville Road in south Asheville.

According to an Asheville Police Department release, officers responded to the scene of the collision around 2:55 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8 near the 1800 block of Hendersonville Road.

Owenby had been driving a Kawasaki ZX600-G motorcycle north along Hendersonville Road when he collided with a 2021 Honda Pilot attempting a left turn from Gala Drive. Owenby was rushed to Mission Hospital where he perished from his injuries.

The APD investigation into the collision is ongoing. After the investigation, APD will consult with the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office about next steps.
