ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is offering two free smartphone apps to help individuals in recovery from substance use disorder and their families navigate holiday celebrations and other social events that can pose challenges to sobriety.

Holidays, family gatherings and seasonal celebrations can present triggers such as alcohol, peer pressure, disrupted routines, travel or stressful family dynamics. For individuals in recovery and their loved ones, these situations can heighten stress, isolation and the risk of relapse.

Recovery from SUD is a challenging journey that is more successful with ongoing support and connection to others who understand, NCDHHS said in a statement.

More than 48 million people aged 12 and older are affected by SUD in the United States, including over one million North Carolinians, according to NCDHHS.

Apps provide 24/7 support

NCDHHS offers two apps: Connections, for people in recovery, and Companion, for families, friends and loved ones.

Connections provides peer support through moderated discussion forums, virtual support group meetings, daily check-ins, motivational content and educational resources. The app, available in English and Spanish, also includes crisis response features.

Companion connects family members and loved ones to virtual support groups, educational content, and a community of peers. According to NCDHHS, support for families can improve communication, strengthen relationships and reduce stigma.

Access

Both apps are free and available to all North Carolinians.
