ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — If you are a North Carolinian stressed about the looming deadline of Tax Day, breathe a little sigh of relief: N.C. residents have been granted a deadline extension for their 2024 tax returns.
For most citizens in the United States, taxes are due to the IRS on Tax Day, Tuesday, April 15. However, after the sweeping devastation of natural disasters around the country, a dozen different states have been granted extensions to file their returns.
For North Carolinians, the new deadline to file their 2024 taxes is Thursday, May 1, 2025. Best of all, no special filing is required to be granted the extension.
According to an IRS press release, the IRS “normally provides relief, including postponing various tax filing and payment deadlines for any area designated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). If a taxpayer’s address of record is in a disaster area locality, individual and business taxpayers automatically get the extra time without having to ask for it.”
N.C. taxpayers join taxpayers in the entire states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina for the extension, as well as wide swaths of Tennessee and Virginia.
Anyone whose tax records were lost or destroyed in Hurricane Helene can receive a free transcript of their returns from the IRS.
