ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Asheville police assisted Buncombe County sheriff’s deputies Friday in a law enforcement operation that briefly shut down parts of Brevard Road in West Asheville.

Shortly after 1 p.m., multiple Asheville Police Department vehicles with lights and sirens moved down Haywood Road before turning onto Brevard Road, where officers blocked traffic in both directions near Olney Road. Authorities appeared to have surrounded a small pickup truck, and two people were seen detained in handcuffs.

A nearby resident said he was unsure what had happened. “I have no clue. I just walked out,” he said.

According to the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at 12:54 p.m. to a call for service at Oak Terrace Road. When they arrived, they found one person deceased. The agency said the investigation remains active.

Oak Terrace Road remained closed Friday evening, and deputies are asking residents to use alternate routes to allow law enforcement to work safely.

Authorities were still at Oak Terrace Road at 8 p.m. Friday.

An Asheville Police Department spokesperson said the incident near the Olney Road intersection stemmed from the sheriff’s office operation that extended into city limits, and APD was providing support.

There is currently no known threat to the community, a sheriff’s office spokesperson said. Out of respect for the family, the victim’s name will not be released until next of kin have been notified.

Authorities said further information will be shared as it becomes available.
