ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Auroras may be visible across the Carolinas and northeast Georgia on Sunday night because of a large solar storm heading toward Earth, according to the National Weather Service.

While visibility is not guaranteed, the storm could bring rare southern sightings of the northern lights. For the best chance to see the display, residents are encouraged to head to dark, rural areas and look to the sky throughout Sunday night into early Monday morning.

The solar storm must arrive during nighttime hours for any auroras to be visible. Although there is no specific timing, long-exposure photography may help capture the lights if they appear.
