ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Snow is on the way. The only questions now are how much and whether it will be mixed with ice or freezing rain.
Winter Storm Warnings went up Thursday for Western North Carolina as Winter Storm Cora targeted the southern United States. Gov. Josh Stein declared a state of emergency in advance of the storm, which forecasters said could bring up to 3 inches of snow to many parts of the state, with higher amounts in mountain areas. Sleet and freezing rain are also likely.
According to the National Weather Service, portions of WNC could get between 2 and 8 inches of snow and sleet and a tenth of an inch of ice.
Winter precipitation is expected to start this morning and continue through the night.
City of Asheville and North Carolina Department of Transportation crews have already started treating roads, though officials urge people to stay off the roads during the storm.
