ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The alternative rock band Five Eight is joining forces with the Asheville punk outfit PINKEYE for a concert and multimedia showcase at The Grey Eagle this weekend.
What to expect at the Five Eight show
Five Eight released the single “Take Me To The Skatepark” earlier this year, marking their first new music in six years. In addition to a live performance, the band will present a screening of “Weirdo: The Story of Five Eight,” a feature documentary directed by Marc Pilvinsky chronicling the “ups and downs” of the Athens, Georgia band.
For PINKEYE, meanwhile, the concert will mark the release of their second studio album, “Better Stay Clear!,” recorded early this year in Arden, N.C.
The show will begin at 8 p.m., Friday, Aug. 22 at The Grey Eagle, 185 Clingman Ave. in the River Arts District. Tickets are available for purchase here.
“Back in the early 90s, we played Asheville as a three-piece at the old straight edge club, The Squashpile,” said Five Eight singer Mike Mantione. “Somehow we’re still here, playing at small clubs trying to make connections with people. We are still making club owners turn off TVs and asking people to come up close to experience a band that has to play.”
While The Squashpile is no longer around, The Grey Eagle is an intimate venue which can provide the exact type of up-close-and-personal musical experience Mantione described.
The “Weirdo” documentary screening will offer a different kind of intimate look into the history of the Athens alt-rock group.
“We’ve been having so much fun bringing this movie to towns from Orlando to Austin and can’t wait to screen it in Asheville,” said director Pilvinsky. “There’s nothing quite like seeing 37 years of a band’s history on screen and then having them step on stage and melt faces immediately afterward. I’ve seen Five Eight play dozens and dozens of times since the early 1990s and these after-screening shows have been some of their best.”
