ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Flooring is one of the biggest decisions homeowners make during a renovation, and one of the easiest to get wrong. A sample that looks perfect under showroom lights can feel completely different once it is installed throughout an entire home.

As part of our ongoing homeowner education series with the Builders Association of the Blue Ridge Mountains, we asked Brad Israel, project manager at WNC Floor & Home, formerly Carpet One Floor & Home, in Candler, what he wishes more homeowners knew before choosing new flooring.

Looks matter, but lifestyle matters more

Before comparing colors, textures or finishes, take a step back and think about how your home functions day to day.

“Lifestyle is the most important factor we consider when guiding clients,” Israel said. “The way you live in your home directly determines which flooring will hold up and look its best for years.”

For example, households with dogs may prioritize scratch-resistant and stain-resistant products that can stand up to muddy paws and occasional accidents, while families with young children often benefit from surfaces that are comfortable underfoot and provide good slip resistance.

How often a home is occupied can also influence the decision. A flooring product that works well in a second home or vacation property may not be the best fit for a primary residence. Similarly, flooring in a rarely used guest room may have different requirements than flooring in a kitchen or family room that sees constant activity.

Do not get hung up on hardwood

For many homeowners, hardwood is the gold standard of flooring. And while it is a beautiful and timeless option, Israel said it is not always the best choice for every home.

“Some assume solid hardwood is always the premium choice, but in humid or higher-moisture environments it can warp,” he said.

That is an important consideration in Western North Carolina, where seasonal humidity swings can affect how certain flooring materials perform over time.

Today’s homeowners have more options than ever. Engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl and laminate flooring can often deliver a similar look while offering added durability and moisture resistance.

Moisture protection is not one-size-fits-all

Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and entryways all have one thing in common: moisture. That is why Israel encourages homeowners to pay close attention to the difference between water-resistant and waterproof flooring before making a selection.

“Water-resistant flooring repels water for a limited time,” he said. “Comparatively, waterproof flooring withstands water indefinitely without damage.”

Choosing the right product can help protect a home and reduce the risk of moisture-related issues such as mold and mildew.

See it in your space before you decide

What catches your eye in a showroom is not always what you will love once it is installed. An engineered white oak that initially feels like the perfect choice may look too yellow next to your cabinets. Likewise, a gray luxury vinyl plank may not complement your countertops.

That is why Israel encourages homeowners to request samples before making a final decision. Comparing samples in the rooms where they will be installed is often the easiest way to narrow the choices and avoid second-guessing a decision later.

A little guidance goes a long way

Choosing flooring often involves balancing competing priorities. The most durable option may not be the most affordable. The style you love may not be the best fit for your lifestyle. And what works beautifully in one room may not make sense in another.
