BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A second trial for a Buncombe County woman resulted in a guilty verdict Thursday morning.
According to the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office, 50-year-old Shannon Nicole Daves was found guilty of first-degree murder by a jury on Aug. 29.
Daves was charged in 2020 with shooting and killing her boyfriend at the time, Michael Evans, whom she had lived with on Copper Mill Court in Candler. According to a press release from the Buncombe County DA’s Office, video recorded by a Furbo pet monitoring camera captured the shooting on Dec. 23, 2020, and was presented to the jury during the latest eight-day trial. Additionally, an American Arms Guardian .32 ACP handgun was recovered from the scene in 2020.
The North Carolina Medical Examiner determined Evans died as a result of gunshot wounds to the chest, abdomen and leg in 2020.
This was the second jury trial regarding Evans’ murder. The DA said on Feb. 13, 2023, Buncombe County Superior Court Judge J. Grant ordered a mistrial in the first jury trial of Daves.
“I thank the jurors for their conscientious deliberations to reach this verdict in this senseless and tragic case and wish the Evans family peace and healing. If you are a victim of domestic violence please contact law enforcement and the Buncombe County Family Justice Center for immediate assistance,” District Attorney Todd Williams said in a press release.
Superior Court Judge Steve Warren sentenced Daves to serve a life term of imprisonment without the possibility of parole in state prisons.
“I thank the family of Michael Evans for their patience and support over these past three and a half years and two complete jury trials. I am releived and gratified that their patience ended with accountability for Daves,” ADA Kyle Sherard said in a release.
