Woman shot, suspect taken into custody

CANDLER, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A suspect has been taken into custody after a woman was shot Tuesday night in Candler.

When Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call at 162 Marathon Lane in Candler about 8:30 p.m., they found a woman with a gunshot wound. The woman, who was conscious, alert and able to talk with deputies, was taken to Mission Hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries, the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

A man in the home was arrested and taken into custody.

Lee Burgess Wheeler, 64, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He is being held in the Buncombe County Detention Facility under no bond.
